November, 13 2007 - TOON BOOM INTERVIEW

Achieving more in less time with Digital Pro! - "I am shifting more of my animation work towards using Toon Boom Digital Pro as the main tool of choice." -Chris Dill (animator)

TOONBOOM: "Please describe your work flow"

Please describe your workflow I like to start off with a concept or idea for a cartoon and build it into a script. The script always begins with a synopsis or outline of how the entire cartoon will go. I try to develop as many ideas as possible during this stage but like to leave room for on-the-fly ideas that may jump out at me later.

If I am working for a client who already has a song or comedy bit, I like to jump straight into developing ideas and concepts with him or her, and determine the general direction of the animation.

Once the direction is determined, I like to rough out a very basic storyboard and kind of layout the shots. I then draw the assets I know I will need for the shots I know I have. I often will go ahead and begin animating with a partial storyboard, leaving room for ideas to come later.

Some of my best ideas are added to an animation during the animation stage. That's just the way I work. After the general storyboard phase, I run through the script and do the voiceovers needed.

I then sketch out the characters needed and their different parts that I know I will need.

After sketches I ink and color the character drawings. I used to draw the characters on paper and scan them for digital inking but now I do everything digitally on my tablet PC much faster. Again, since I like to leave room for ideas during the animation stage, I start animating the scenes that have been planned and then fill in the gaps in between with ideas as they come until the whole animation is finished.

September, 8 2007 - RANDOM OLD GUY DRAWING

Hey guys, I received my copy of Toon Boom Digital Pro today via DHL! I played with the FREE version (PLE) first and decided to go ahead and acquire the full PRO version.

Here is the rough I drew in TB Digital Pro.

Old Guy Rough sketch

Needless to say, I was as excited as a kid hearing the "ding ding man" driving down the street. Below is my very first drawing in Toon Boom Digital Pro of a character I just created on the fly. Toon Boom's drawing tools are top notch, and the animation tools are truly great!

Here is the final version I did in TB Digital Pro.

I will be writing a full, detailed review very soon. Now I need to get back to work on Rex Havens' project!

I am working with prankster extraordinairre Tom Mabe, famous... or should I say infamous, for getting "Revenge on the telemarketers". We've teamed up to develop a new TV show for a popular television network.

The show will contain animation and characters designed by yours truly. I can't thank Tom enough for giving me this great oppurtunity!
